How to Prepare Furniture When Moving

Regardless of whether you plan to shift houses on your own or hire movers, moving can be a stressful and overwhelming experience.

For a completely stress-free moving process, you need to be prepared for it beforehand.

Packing the furniture is one of the biggest concerns when it comes to moving.

Move My Stuff - Furniture Removalists has jotted down the list of things you need to keep in mind while moving.

1.Make a list of the furniture pieces you need to move:

While moving, you may have some furniture that you wish to discard or leave behind.

So, take a note of all the furniture you will be moving, and which of these items require prior dismantling such as fragile items.

You can also organize lists depending on whether the furniture can be dismantled right away or dismantled a night before the move.

2. Measure the doors and hallways:

Sometimes furniture needs to be dismantled to fit through your doors and hallways.

Take note of the furniture that may have to be dismantled for this reason.

Not all furniture needs to be pulled apart.

It need not be dismantled if it can easily fit through the door and hallway, is light enough to be moved, and not endure any lasting damage during the move.

For example, a coffee table does not necessarily look like it requires dismantling, as it is light in weight and small enough to fit through passages.

But dismantling it will ensure that it does not break during the move.

3. Procure the right tools and equipment:

In this step, you need to ensure that you have the correct tools for the dismantling. Often using the wrong tools can damage your furniture permanently.

Additionally, keep a couple of plastic sandwich bags and a permanent marker ready to store small pieces of fasteners and fixings.

For big and fragile furniture like tabletops, mirrors, and other costly pieces of furniture, make sure you have furniture blankets or a bubble wrap roll or two.

You can also rent a dolly to move heavier items of furniture freely.

4. Disassembling:

Disassemble the larger pieces of furniture like tables, desks, and wardrobes, which may take a long time.

When you disassemble dressers or any furniture with handles and knobs, make sure you detach them from the wood so that they don’t get damaged.

Sort the small screws, bolts, and any other fixing associated with the furniture arrangement in a separate plastic bag and label it.

Maintain different bags for different furniture items to avoid any confusion.

Take pictures of furniture before dismantling them, so that reassembling becomes more comfortable for you.

The safe way to avoid losing any of these bags is to tape it onto the piece of furniture.

This way, you will not misplace it.

If you still have the assembly instruction manual, then feel free to tape that as well.

Just make sure that you use a paper tape rather than duct tape as the latter may damage your furniture.

5. Pack any item that can be packed:

Furniture parts like cushions and pillows can be packed in clear, plastic garbage bags.

These pieces can be used to cushion fragile pieces or fill empty spaces in the moving truck.

Wrap the furniture pieces with moving blankets or bubble wrap and tape it well.

Avoid using tape on painted or polished furniture surfaces as it may cause damage.

Do not try to clean any furniture or upholstery before the move. It is best to clean everything thoroughly after it has been moved.

6. Load the heavy furniture into the truck first:

If you have rented a moving truck and decided to load the furniture on your own, make sure you know the correct way to load the vehicle.

The heavier items like sofas, appliances, tables, wardrobes, and dressers should be loaded onto the truck first.

These items should be placed at the back of the moving truck. Fill in any unnecessary gaps with the soft plastic bags.
